One of my all time favourite things to do over the summer holidays is to spend my days roaming the beautiful farms of Cape Winelands, from wine tasting, having a picnic or just an afternoon scenic drive. This is the best way to soak up some sun and spend some quality chill time with the friends and family.
I will always treasure the day I had spent with my family at the Hartenberg Wine farm in Stellenbosch earlier this year. After a morning of strawberry picking at Polkadraai, we had a bit of a feast and play around the beautiful farm. Upon arrival we each received our very own pre-packed picnic basket, filled with the yummiest treats, and a bottle of pre-selected wine. The setup of the picnic area was perfectly pleasant. Each group had their own table surrounded by an array of giant cushions, picnic blankets and umbrella’s.
Each picnic basket included a variety of breads; ciabatta, seed loaf, and a baguette, proscuitto, salads, paté, figs, the yummiest beetroot pesto i’ve ever tried and chocolate brownies with the optional ice cream. We had totally out done ourselves and had a total “too full bellied” lazy afternoon. Their signature wines are great and they do too have wine tasting facilities on the farm, but who resist the picnic option?
The Constantia Wine route is amazingly beautiful. I am almost always astonished by how green the farms are. I had done this route as a pitstop on the Red Bus Peninsula tour last year with the girls and it was unfortunately too much of a rush. So I will definitely be making my way back over the festive season.
